Providing Abrasives for Industry

Naturally occurring Garnet is a family of minerals found worldwide in varying forms of chemical and physical structure. Garnet is found in “hard rock” forms and alluvial deposits. The rock form is mined, crushed, washed and graded to various sizes whereas the alluvial form is the result of erosion rendering sand like particles with abraded edges. The chemistry and crystalline structure varies markedly.

GarNOTTM is a crystalline silica free by-product derived from the refining of elemental phosphorus. Derived as a rapidly quenched, high temperature (+1500 degrees C) Calcium Silicate Slag, the Silica is chemically bound with Calcium to form CaSiO2. The demanding precision of the production process insures extreme uniformity of the Calcium Silicate thereby produced. Any airborne dust produced during mining, production and use of this product is classified by NIOSH and the EPA as a nuisance dust (non-carcinogenic).

A mineral must be hard enough to effect stock removal under given force, and yet, must not be so hard that deleterious wear is experience in tooling and nozzles. Abrasive minerals above MoH’s 8 (Aluminum Oxide, Silicon Carbide, Boron Carbide, etc.) will cut effectively, however blast nozzle life is severely shortened. Both Garnet and GarNOTTM have similar crystal hardness of 7+ MoH’s.

When Calcium Silicate is mined and processed, the result is a granular product that contains a full spectrum of particle sizes. Once dried, screened and air classified to the appropriate size, the product GarNOTTM is produced for water jet cutting and blasting applications. GarNOTTM has been thoroughly tested for its functionality in both applications (in various commercial environments) and has been successful.
